Chelsea: Why Cole Palmer Won’t Be Absent for the Man Utd Clash Despite Tottenham Red Card

Cole Palmer will not miss Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Manchester United on Saturday, despite being sent off in the Blues’ last league match.

Palmer was shown two yellow cards in the second half of Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat by rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The dismissal earned the England playmaker a one-match ban.

He received his first caution for an off-the-ball incident involving Spurs’ Mateus Fernandes. He was then shown a second yellow card for a foul on Conor Gallagher.

Why the ban will not affect the United game

In most cases, a suspension like this would be served in the team’s next Premier League match. However, Palmer will be available for the clash with United at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, he will sit out Chelsea’s EFL Cup fourth-round tie away at Liverpool on Wednesday night. Red card suspensions are carried out across domestic competitions rather than being limited to the competition in which they were received.

Suspensions for an accumulation of yellow cards, however, are served in the competition in which they were picked up. That is why the Blues will be without Palmer at Anfield but will have him back to face United three days after the cup tie on Merseyside.
