Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the Champions League on Tuesday, was sent off and will miss Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal. The French forward’s dismissal helped Viking salvage a 3-3 draw in Stavanger, Norway.
Olise was already on a yellow card for a tactical foul that stopped a Viking counter-attack when he tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic‘s head. The referee showed him a second booking within seconds, and the home crowd cheered. Bayern led 3-2 at the time, but the red card left them with 10 men and gave Viking the opening they needed.
Viking Claw Back a Point
Tripic crossed the ball for Herman Haugen, who headed in the equalizer in the 90th minute. It was Olise’s first career sending-off in a senior game, and it earned him a one-match ban.
Bayern had trailed 2-0 before fighting back through two quick second-half goals from Harry Kane. The England striker has now scored in nine consecutive Champions League games. Luis Díaz had given Bayern a 3-2 lead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.
Kane Backs Teammate, Admits Missed Chance
Kane said Olise would have to accept responsibility and learn from the incident. “He’ll have to take responsibility obviously, he’ll have to learn from it,” Kane said after the game. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games. But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”
Kane also felt Bayern should have collected all three points. “We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” he added. “You take the point and you move on.”
The draw interrupts Bayern’s momentum after they opened their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 win over another Norwegian side, Bodø/Glimt, last month. Bayern now must regroup without Olise for their clash with Arsenal, the Premier League champions.
